I thought I would share with you our weaning journey!
I find weaning completely overwhelming! I feel there’s just so many rules your supposed to stick to, and knowing what to look out for.. it was hard at first! But I feel I was just making it more complicated than it needed to be!
We managed to make it til 5 and a half months before we started weaning Freddie. They recommend 6 months now, but I also know some people do it sooner. No judgement from me! I just didn’t feel the need to wean Freddie any earlier, he wasn’t particularly a hungry baby. He was having a bottle every 3 hours and usually not even finishing that he was having anywhere between 5-7oz. This slowly began to reduce further and further though. I spoke to the health visitor as I was a bit concerned at how quickly he was dropping bottles, and obviously he wasn’t getting food at this point either. He dropped to about 3oz bottles and would quite happily skip a bottle. The health visitor advised me it might be time to start weaning!
I tried to sit down and get my head around it all, but it just confused me! I knew you had to be careful with sugar and salt content but that was all really! I wanted to do purely baby led weaning, but seen as I was starting a little earlier than I planned I decided to do a mixture! The first thing I tried Freddie with was some scrambled egg and toast.. safe to say he was a bit confused and pulled some faces at it! Imagine going from just bottles to suddenly this lumpy rubbery stuff that went in your mouth!
He was definitely intrigued by it! And definitely knew what he was doing! At that point I decided to scrap that and try porridge later on in the day.. safe to say that went down a treat. He LOVED it.
I tried with bits of veg but to be honest at the beginning the whole baby led weaning thing scared me a bit! I know it was normal for them to gag and things, it’s all a whole new world to them. It just scared me.. so for a few weeks I stuck with blended foods but with lumps in still, and I put fruit in those fruit meshes you can get which he also loved!
If you ever wonder what puréed food to use.. Ella’s kitchen pouches were a god send! They were so easy to sort and I found they had no nasties in them! So I was more than happy to give them to Freddie. Still to this day if I’m out and about they are just so easy and convenient!
I was panicking about over feeding Freddie as now he was having food I was lost as to how many bottles I was supposed to give him and when.. I don’t know why I worried, Freddie was the boss. He literally took lead and showed me what to do. He dropped a lot of bottles quite quickly! Suddenly he was only having one or two bottles during the day and one before bed!
I tried to offer him water all the time, but at the beginning it was a nightmare! He just was not interested. He slowly got better though and I changed he cup he was drinking out of. I found the Nuby grip and sip worked a lot better for him than the tommee tippee cup.
When Freddie was on 3 meals a day after a few weeks of starting it was easier for us to give him what we were having. This is when I really started the baby led weaning properly. I made sure I didn’t cook with any extra salt. And I made sure it was all freshly cooked from scratch rather than jars. When you suddenly have to look at salt content it’s amazing how much salt is in things! Freddie took to it like a pro. He absolutely loved feeding himself. I struggle to give him anything spoon fed now as he just wants to do it all himself. Broccoli and strawberries definitely seem to be a strong favourite for him.
I give Freddie some little snacks during the day, and these have all been AMAZING. Freddie absolutely loves them!
(Ignore the lasagne that obviously wasn’t for a snack! But they are the pouches I was talking about)
If your unsure what to give your baby as snacks, I would definitely recommend all of these. They are definitely my go to. He doesn’t have a full packet of crisps just a few from the pack.
There’s also kiddylicious veg sticks which are another winner as well.
To be honest.. enjoy it! It’s something new for your baby and a whole new door has just opened for them! If they don’t like something first time keep trying. Freddie loves pretty much everything now!
